New Laws Restrict Use of Handheld Cell Phones

GET HANDS-FREE DEVICES FOR CELL PHONES

Starting July 1, 2008 two new California laws will affect ALL DRIVERS within the state including those who are from out-of-state. Drivers over 18 years old are prohibited from using a HANDHELD wireless phone while operating a motor vehicle, but may use a HANDS-FREE device. Those under 18 may not use either a handheld or hands-free device except in cases of an emergency.

According the the California Highway Patrol (CHP) there will be no grace period but the issuance of a citation will be up to the individual officer. Convictions will result in fines for first and subsequent offenses.

This notice is intended to make the public aware of these new restrictions while driving in California, but for complete information read the official Wireless Telephone Laws FAQ from the CHP.
